Yes, Thanksgiving is still three months away. And yes, it’s still summer. Yet that didn’t stop me from spotting a full Thanksgiving display at the mall the other day.
That display—and the conversation it sparked with my wife—brought me back to a pivotal moment in our lives: Thanksgiving 2008.
Just weeks earlier, the stock market had crashed. Investment banks were collapsing. The mortgage industry was paralyzed. The country felt like it was teetering on the edge of another Great Depression.
The mortgage company where I had built my career for 16 years had just shut down. I had a mortgage to pay and three young children—two still in diapers—to support. My wife was understandably panicked. She kept asking, “Are we going to be OK? Are we going to be OK?”
One of my favorite quotes from Charles Udall kept echoing in my mind:
“In life, you will always be faced with a series of God-ordained opportunities
brilliantly disguised as problems and challenges.”
I knew the road ahead would be tough. But deep down, I had an unshakable sense of faith and confidence. I looked at my wife and said, “Don’t worry. You’ll see—this is the best thing that could have happened.”
And it was.
Seventeen years, two businesses, and one published book later, I can say with certainty: the Great Recession of 2008 brought me opportunities and opened doors I never would have walked through otherwise.
